Edinburgh Innovations is proud to present the next event in the Spotlight on Industry series showcasing successful collaborations between University of Edinburgh researchers and industry partners.

This event is of particular interest to early-mid career researchers wanting to engage with industry and a great example of how university research can help address commercial challenges. Hear about a collaboration nominated to the 6th Knowledge Exchange Awards with a partner named 2021 Manufacturer of the Year at the Business Insider Made in Scotland Awards.

-

Join us online to hear how Aqualution Systems Ltd found solutions to unprecedented Covid-19 demand using academic expertise. The project was funded through the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) which enabled this collaboration to flourish and lead to further projects.

This event provides a unique opportunity to:

  • hear about a collaboration from both the company and the academic perspectives
  • explore how industry partnerships are developed
  • learn what it is like to work with an industry partner and how this can benefit you and your career
  • ask your questions during the audience Q&A session

Speakers

  • Dr Adam Stokes is Reader in Engineering in the Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems and is Director of the Soft Systems Group, an interdisciplinary research laboratory. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the UK-RAS Network, a member of the OGTC Academic Panel, and an Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters. His research interests include robotics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, materials science, nanotechnology, optics, proteomics, and cell biology.

  • Nick Meakin is a qualified chemist who has worked with Aqualution Systems Ltd since 2002. In his past career, he has worked in automotive, food, airline and aquaculture industries in senior management and main board roles and brings that experience to understanding how our products can best be applied to new sectors. Aqualution’s technology generates hypochlorous acid from water and salt via in-house designed electro-dialysis process to produce a stable, fast-acting biocide for many different uses.

-

Background: The project partner Aqualution Systems Ltd had been manufacturing their disinfectant for several years and at relatively low scale. In the global pandemic the demand for disinfectant rose exponentially but supply was limited by production methods. The University’s expertise in pH monitoring, control, process automation and development, facilitated a project leading to successful scale-up.
